Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled plans for a £300 million (€359.84 million) investment to expand its manufacturing facility in Goodwood, West Sussex. This is one of the most significant investments the company has made since the facility’s opening in 2003.
Focus on Bespoke Craftsmanship and EVs
The expansion will enhance Rolls-Royce’s bespoke and Coachbuild production capabilities while positioning the company for future electric vehicle (EV) development. Currently, the Goodwood facility produces 28 cars daily and employs more than 2,500 highly skilled workers. Rolls-Royce also supports 7,500 jobs across its UK supply chain.
The investment comes after a record-breaking 2024, during which the luxury automaker saw a 10% increase in bespoke content value per car and achieved its third-highest annual sales figure, delivering 5,712 vehicles globally. Popular models such as the Ghost Series II, Cullinan Series II, and their Black Badge variants played a key role in this success.
Navigating Challenges Amid Growth
Despite its strong performance, Rolls-Royce is addressing several challenges, including global supply chain disruptions, the lingering effects of the pandemic, and economic pressures like inflation and higher interest rates. These factors have extended wait times for its models and softened overall demand.
In response, the company is refining its product strategy to appeal to younger luxury buyers and stay ahead in an increasingly competitive market.
CEO Chris Brownridge emphasized the brand’s adaptability, stating:
“In 2024, Rolls-Royce crafted its most complex and valuable motor cars, reflecting growing client demand for bespoke luxury experiences.”
Strengthening Innovation and UK Presence
The Goodwood expansion underscores Rolls-Royce’s commitment to innovation and sustaining its UK operations. By increasing bespoke production capacity and preparing for an all-electric future, Rolls-Royce aims to maintain its status as a leader in ultra-luxury automotive craftsmanship while meeting the evolving demands of its clientele.
This investment solidifies Goodwood’s role as the heart of Rolls-Royce’s global operations and reinforces the company’s focus on both tradition and cutting-edge technology.
