Many companies are increasingly firing Generation Z employees soon after hiring them, citing issues with professionalism, communication, and work ethic. A recent survey by Intelligent, an education and career advisory platform, found that employers are becoming hesitant to hire recent graduates, with some blaming a lack of preparedness for the demands of the workforce.

The Skills Gap: What Gen Z Is Missing

Gen Z, born between 1997 and the early 2010s, is entering a workforce that doesn’t always meet their expectations. Experts point out that while this generation often excels in academic and extracurricular achievements, they struggle with practical workplace skills. Holly Schroth, a senior lecturer at UC Berkeley, notes that many Gen Z workers lack basic social interaction skills, which makes it difficult for them to adjust to professional environments.

The Main Reasons Behind Firings and Job Struggles

Surveyed companies reported that many recent graduates lack motivation, professionalism, and communication skills, leading to early dismissals. Over 60% of employers said they had fired recent college graduates in 2023. Gen Z employees often struggle with the shift from a structured education system to a less structured work environment, where self-sufficiency and adaptability are key.

Some reports also suggest that Gen Z workers still rely heavily on their parents, with 70% seeking parental help during their job search, and 25% bringing parents to interviews.

What Employers Want from Gen Z

Employers are looking for candidates who demonstrate initiative, professionalism, and practical experience. Having internships or real-world job experience can be a major advantage, while managing one’s social media presence and avoiding political discussions also plays a role in securing employment.

Despite some challenges, Gen Z represents over 25% of the workforce. With proper training and guidance, they have the potential to succeed in the long term, benefiting both employees and employers.
