Tesla introduced a premium version of the Model Y, first launched in China, now expanding to the US, Canada, and Europe. The Model Y remains Tesla’s best-selling vehicle, but the new version brings significant upgrades in design, features, and performance.
This new all-wheel-drive, long-range Model Y costs $59,990 (€57,166.0) in the US. It represents a 25% price increase compared to the previous version, which sells for $47,990 (€45,733.75). Unlike earlier versions, the new Model Y includes supervised full self-driving software as a standard feature, previously available as an $8,000 optional upgrade. Tesla expects deliveries to start in March 2025.
Enhanced Design and Performance Features
The latest Model Y features an improved exterior with updated tyres, suspension, and wheels. Interior enhancements include front and rear touchscreens, better signal range, and upgraded connectivity. The vehicle offers a greater range of 320 miles (515 km) and increased storage capacity, making it more practical for long-distance travel.
This premium Model Y becomes the fourth version available in the US and the most expensive. Despite its popularity, Model Y sales declined in 2024 due to reduced EV demand globally and growing competition from lower-cost Chinese electric vehicles.
Tesla Recalls 1.2 Million Vehicles in China
In a separate announcement, Tesla initiated a recall of over 1.2 million vehicles in China due to software issues. The recall applies to both imported and domestically manufactured vehicles.
The identified problem involves a reverse current affecting the power supply of the vehicle computer’s main board. This can cause malfunctions in the rearview camera, increasing accident risks. Tesla plans to address these issues using over-the-air (OTA) updates. However, the company will directly contact owners of vehicles requiring alternative fixes.
The recall impacts 335,716 imported Model X and Model S vehicles, along with domestically made Model Y and Model 3 vehicles manufactured between July 16, 2023, and December 14, 2024.
