Serbian Prime Minister resignation: Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević has announced his resignation. This decision follows weeks of public demonstrations and political turmoil.

Resignation Following Tragedy and Public Outcry

Miloš Vučević stepped down as Serbia’s Prime Minister on Tuesday, citing increasing pressure from nationwide protests. These protests began in November after a tragic incident in Novi Sad, where a collapsed train station roof claimed 15 lives. Vučević, previously the mayor of Novi Sad, faced criticism for his role in overseeing the station’s renovations.

Demonstrations, supported by students, educators, and workers, have become a daily occurrence in Belgrade and other cities. Protesters demand accountability for the tragedy and call for significant political changes. Many also seek the resignation of President Aleksandar Vučić, leader of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), to which Vučević belongs.

    Escalating Violence and Revelations

The situation intensified when students protesting in Novi Sad were attacked. A group of men wielding baseball bats, reportedly linked to SNS offices, assaulted the activists. Several people were injured, including a medical student who was hospitalized with fractures. Vučević condemned the violence but claimed the protests were “orchestrated abroad” to destabilize Serbia.

Meanwhile, newly released documents revealed additional details about the station’s renovation. These papers identified an undisclosed construction firm potentially linked to the disaster. Authorities in Novi Sad are considering expanding charges against the 13 individuals already accused of negligence.

Demands for Reforms and Uncertainty Ahead

Opposition leaders are calling for a transitional government before holding new elections. They aim to prevent alleged election fraud, as seen in 2023. However, the SNS has firmly rejected this proposal, leaving the country’s political future uncertain.

Protesters continue to escalate their efforts to pressure the government. In Belgrade, they staged a 24-hour blockade at a major transportation hub. Meanwhile, students in Novi Sad are occupying their university and demanding full disclosure of all renovation-related documents.

Vučević’s resignation reflects growing discontent with Serbia’s leadership. The protests signal deep political divisions, and the country’s next steps could shape its future.
