Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has pledged to eliminate foreign-funded organizations and resist what he describes as an oppressive “Brussels Empire.” Addressing thousands of supporters on a national holiday, Orbán accused the European Union and the “liberal American empire” of conspiring against Hungary’s sovereignty.
Targeting Foreign-Funded Groups
Orbán announced plans to dismantle media outlets, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and activists receiving foreign funding. He described these groups as “overwintered bugs” that need to be eradicated to protect Hungary’s interests.
The Hungarian leader has been a vocal critic of foreign influence, particularly from the United States and the European Union. His administration is now proposing constitutional amendments to allow the deportation of dual citizens deemed threats to national security.
Escalating Criticism Against the EU
Drawing parallels between Brussels’ influence and historical oppression by the Austrian Habsburgs, Orbán argued that the EU is trying to dominate Hungary in a similar way. “Brussels has jumped headlong into the Russian-Ukrainian war,” he claimed, suggesting that the EU’s support for Ukraine is a ploy to “colonize” the country.
Orbán also took a firm stance against Ukraine’s potential membership in the EU, promoting the slogan, “Union, but without Ukraine.” This statement comes amid heightened tensions over Western intervention and Hungary’s resistance to aligning with broader EU policies.
Crackdown on Media, NGOs, and Civil Rights
In addition to targeting foreign-funded groups, Orbán vowed legal action against organizations financed by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). His government has also introduced legislation aimed at restricting LGBTQ+ rights, including a proposed ban on Budapest Pride in public spaces.
These measures are part of broader efforts by the Fidesz party to suppress dissent and reinforce conservative values in Hungary. Critics argue that these actions undermine democracy and stifle free expression.
Promoting Anti-Migration Rhetoric
During his speech, Orbán echoed themes associated with the “great replacement theory,” warning that “the empire” seeks to replace Europe’s native populations with foreign migrants. This rhetoric has been a recurring theme in his speeches, aiming to galvanize support from nationalist and anti-immigration factions.
National Poll on Ukraine’s EU Membership
In a move aimed at consolidating his position, Orbán announced plans for a national poll to let Hungarian citizens decide whether Ukraine should be allowed to join the European Union. This approach is likely to intensify debates within the country and beyond.
