FBI Seizes Record Number of Explosives in Virginia

Federal agents discovered over 150 pipe bombs and other homemade explosives at Brad Spafford’s home in December. Prosecutors believe this to be the largest seizure of explosive devices in FBI history.

The explosives were primarily stored in a detached garage, with more found unsecured in a backpack inside the house. Spafford, 36, was arrested on firearms charges, specifically for possessing an unregistered short-barrel rifle, and faces additional potential charges related to explosives.

Defense Disputes Allegations of Violent Intent

Spafford’s attorneys argued there is no evidence he planned any violent acts, citing his clean criminal record. They questioned whether the seized explosives were even functional and emphasized that no threats had been reported against him.

The investigation began in 2023 when an informant reported Spafford was stockpiling weapons. The informant claimed Spafford disfigured his hand in 2021 while making explosives and used images of President Biden for target practice.

Court Weighs Release Amid Safety Concerns

Law enforcement found the devices, including some labeled “lethal,” during a property search on 17 December. Many were detonated onsite for safety, while others were kept for further analysis.

At a Tuesday hearing, the court ruled Spafford could be placed under house arrest but delayed release pending further arguments. Prosecutors labeled him dangerous, citing his pipe bombs, riot gear, and support for political assassinations. They highlighted his vest loaded with explosives and his expressed violent interests as key concerns.
