Tesla is recalling nearly 700,000 vehicles due to a problem with the tyre pressure monitoring system warning light. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the warning light may fail to stay illuminated between drive cycles, potentially leaving drivers unaware of low tyre pressure. Driving with underinflated tyres can increase the risk of accidents.
The recall affects certain 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3, and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles. Tesla has announced a free software update to address the issue, with owner notification letters scheduled to be sent on February 15, 2024.
Cybertruck Faces Another Recall in 2024
This recall marks the seventh for Tesla’s 2024 Cybertruck, which has seen a series of issues since its debut. In November 2023, Tesla delivered the first batch of Cybertrucks—two years behind the original schedule. Last month, around 2,400 Cybertrucks were recalled due to unrelated problems.
Tesla has faced multiple recalls this year. In July, the automaker recalled over 1.8 million vehicles due to a hood latch issue that posed a crash risk. Earlier in February, nearly 2.2 million Tesla vehicles in the US were recalled for having instrument panel warning lights deemed too small.
Free Fixes Highlight Tesla’s Recall Strategy
Tesla’s approach to addressing these issues has largely focused on software updates, minimizing the inconvenience to owners. CEO Elon Musk has acknowledged the challenges of scaling production while maintaining quality, especially as Tesla expands its vehicle lineup with the Cybertruck.
Tesla’s ability to resolve recalls promptly through over-the-air updates underscores the company’s innovative approach, but frequent recalls have drawn scrutiny. Owners and regulators continue to monitor how Tesla addresses these recurring quality concerns.
