Unidentified Drones in New Jersey Raise Alarms

Unexplained drone sightings across New Jersey have sparked widespread concern, prompting Republican Representative Chris Smith to demand federal intervention. At a Saturday news briefing, Smith called the incidents a significant threat to public safety and national security, urging swift and transparent action.

“For weeks, we have asked for the truth and actions to mitigate all threats to people and property,” Smith said. “Now, we are demanding it.”

    Lawmaker Pushes for Drone Legislation

Smith announced plans to introduce legislation that would authorize New Jersey state police to neutralize unidentified drones. Local sheriffs have urged this action, citing repeated sightings near sensitive areas, including military installations.

Military personnel at Earle naval weapons station reported drones flying close to an ammunition depot, intensifying concerns. “An ammunition depot of that caliber and these drones are hovering in close proximity to it. Are you kidding me?” Smith said, criticizing federal agencies for downplaying the risks.

Federal officials, including the White House, Pentagon, and FBI, have stated that the drones are likely “manned aircraft operating lawfully.” However, Smith questioned the advanced maneuvering of the drones, suggesting they might represent “major military power sophistication” or originate from adversarial nations like Russia, China, North Korea, or Iran.

    Rising Pressure for Federal Action

The drone sightings have escalated bipartisan frustration over the lack of a coordinated federal response. New York Governor Kathy Hochul echoed these concerns on Saturday, declaring, “This has gone too far.”

Smith revealed that he had contacted Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, seeking authorization to use force against drones perceived as threats. He also pointed to reports from the US Coast Guard of drones following a rescue boat at close range, urging authorities to capture one for analysis.

In response, the Federal Aviation Administration has established no-fly zones in parts of New Jersey. Despite this step, many officials believe broader restrictions and more aggressive measures are needed to address the mystery.

The origin and purpose of these drones remain unclear. As sightings increase near sensitive sites, concerns over public safety and national security continue to grow. Lawmakers and citizens alike are demanding answers and decisive action to resolve the issue.
