The United Kingdom is accelerating its military planning to prepare for a potential ceasefire in Ukraine. Officials suggest that British troops may participate in post-war support, providing assistance on land, at sea, or in the air.
British Troops Could Be Deployed
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the UK might deploy thousands of personnel to support Ukraine. Planning meetings are scheduled to take place next week at Northwood HQ to discuss the structure and logistics of any deployment. This could include troop transport, rotation schedules, and supply chains.
The UK may also reassign troops from other missions to provide more flexibility for focusing on Ukraine. Allied countries could step in to replace these forces, allowing Britain to better allocate its resources.
Allies Prepare Ahead of Paris Summit
The military planning efforts come just before a significant coalition meeting in Paris scheduled for Thursday. The “coalition of the willing,” comprising countries committed to supporting Ukraine, will discuss how to coordinate their efforts effectively.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently met with military leaders from 31 nations, including France, Canada, Poland, Romania, Australia, and the Netherlands. These discussions focused on how to respond if a ceasefire agreement is reached.
Following the meeting, Starmer issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that any breach of peace terms would have serious consequences. Although there are reports suggesting that the UK may focus more on air and naval support, Starmer’s team insists that all options remain on the table.
Ongoing Peace Negotiations
While planning continues, Ukraine, Russia, and U.S. delegates are expected to meet on Monday in Saudi Arabia for further peace negotiations. European and Commonwealth partners are urging President Putin to accept a peace deal supported by both Ukraine and the U.S. Additionally, discussions are underway to establish a peacekeeping strategy.
President Putin reportedly agreed to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy sites after a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. However, Ukraine has reported fresh strikes targeting hospitals and civilian areas.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope for a lasting peace in 2024. However, he rejected a U.S. offer to take control of Ukrainian power plants for enhanced security.
Coordination With Global Leaders
Prime Minister Starmer is also planning discussions with non-EU leaders and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to coordinate future steps and share progress updates.
