Germany’s Ambassador to Washington, Andreas Michaelis, has expressed concerns about threats to U.S. democratic institutions under Donald Trump’s potential second presidency. A confidential diplomatic report, leaked to the media, warns of major changes that could weaken the independence of government branches and the press.

    Concerns Over Power Consolidation

Michaelis cautioned that Trump’s policies might concentrate excessive power within the presidency. This could undermine Congress and state governments. He described Trump’s agenda as one of “maximum disruption,” aimed at dismantling political norms, bureaucratic systems, and the constitutional framework.

The ambassador also highlighted risks of governance reshaping and consolidating authority. He warned that Trump might target political adversaries in his second term. According to the report, these efforts could lead to significant institutional upheaval with lasting consequences for U.S. democracy.

    German Foreign Ministry Reacts

The German Foreign Ministry declined to comment directly on the leaked report. However, it emphasized the importance of strong ties with the United States.

“The U.S. remains one of Germany’s most vital allies,” the ministry stated. “We respect the democratic choice of the American people and will engage constructively with the Trump administration in Germany’s and Europe’s interests.”

    Navigating a Changing Political Landscape

As Trump prepares for his second term, Germany is bracing for potential policy shifts. The leaked report underscores Berlin’s cautious approach in managing these uncertainties. Nevertheless, Germany remains committed to strengthening the transatlantic partnership.

The concerns raised by Germany reflect broader international apprehension. Many nations are watching closely to see how the resilience of U.S. democratic institutions will fare under Trump’s leadership.
