The Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have officially reached an agreement to fully integrate the SDF into the country’s state structures. This landmark decision is expected to reshape Syria’s political and military landscape, bringing previously divided regions under a unified administration.

Agreement Strengthens Commitment to Unified Syria

The agreement was signed by Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF Commander Maslum Abdi. Both parties stressed their dedication to preserving Syria’s territorial unity, firmly rejecting any notion of partition or fragmentation. The deal guarantees equal political participation for all citizens, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. Furthermore, it ensures that the Kurdish community, which has long faced challenges regarding citizenship status, now receives full citizenship rights and formal recognition as part of Syrian society.

Government Takes Control Over Key Regions

As part of the agreement, the Syrian government will assume control over essential civilian and military institutions across northeastern Syria. This includes critical infrastructure such as border crossings, airports, and oil and gas fields. The deal also outlines plans for the safe return of displaced individuals to their homes, aiming to foster stability and security across the region.

Changing Dynamics in the Syrian Conflict

The SDF, previously backed by the United States in the fight against ISIS, had established a form of self-administration within its controlled territories. However, the group has faced hostility from Turkey, which considers the SDF an affiliate of the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) and designates it as a terrorist organization.

Observers believe this agreement marks a significant step toward restoring Syria’s territorial integrity. By accepting full integration into the Syrian state, the SDF will relinquish its military and administrative autonomy, becoming part of the nation’s formal state system.

    Path Forward for Lasting Peace

As the integration process begins, international attention remains on Syria’s ability to implement the agreement effectively. Efforts to maintain peace and stability are expected to require extensive cooperation between both parties, as well as support from the international community.
