Manchester United took a huge step toward the Europa League final with a commanding 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the semi-final. The match, held at the famous San Mames Stadium, could mark a turning point for head coach Ruben Amorim.
Although United’s Premier League form has been shaky—only six wins in 23 matches—their performance in Europe told a different story on Thursday night. Against a Bilbao side known for their solid defence, United produced their best game under Amorim, raising hopes of silverware and a season turnaround.
United Dominate as Bilbao Go Down to Ten Men
Bilbao were reduced to ten players early in the match, but United still had to break through La Liga’s tightest defence. They did so in style.
Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson commented on a radio show:
“That was United’s best game under Amorim. Yes, Bilbao were a man down, but United did everything right.”
Sports pundit Robbie Savage added:
“People will focus on the red card, but scoring three goals against this Bilbao side is something special.”
Big Nights Define Amorim’s United Tenure
Amorim’s time in Manchester has had its ups and downs. While league form has disappointed, the team has shown up in the big matches. United have beaten Manchester City, held Liverpool to a draw, knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup, and crushed Real Sociedad 4-1.
Still, Amorim said this result in Bilbao was the best of the lot.
“I believe this was our best result. No one expected this scoreline,” the Portuguese coach said after the match.
Experienced Stars Step Up Under Pressure
The atmosphere at San Mames was intense. Early on, United looked nervous. Manuel Ugarte lost the ball a few times. Inaki Williams almost scored with a header, and Patrick Dorgu’s advanced position left gaps at the back.
But United’s veterans led the response.
Casemiro was a rock in midfield. He stopped attacks, stayed calm, and even created chances. Harry Maguire, often criticised in the past, crossed the ball that led to Casemiro’s goal. Maguire had already scored the winner against Lyon in the previous round.
Captain Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty with ease and later added a classy second goal.
Amorim gave credit to his senior players:
“Even experienced guys like Ugarte were nervous at first. But Casemiro, Maguire, and Bruno brought calm and control,” he told reporters.
European Statement in First Half Blitz
United rarely start fast in Europe. But this time, they led 3-0 at halftime—something they hadn’t done in a major European game since 2020. It was also their first time scoring three away from home before the break since 2017.
The result leaves Bilbao needing to score four goals at Old Trafford next week. That task looks almost impossible.
With Tottenham beating Bodo/Glimt 3-1 in the other semi-final, a final between two English clubs is now in sight.
“We want our fans to make the trip to Bilbao again,” said Bruno Fernandes. “This win was huge. We stayed in control after halftime.”
Despite the strong position, Amorim warned that nothing is certain.
“Yes, we’re in a good spot. But one game can change everything. We must stay focused,” he said during a post-match interview.
The Europa League final will also take place at San Mames on 21 May—adding to the meaning of Thursday’s win. If United return for the final, it would be the club’s first European final since 2021.
