British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at his official country residence, Chequers, on Sunday, as part of efforts to redefine the UK’s relationship with the European Union. While ruling out rejoining the EU’s single market, Starmer emphasized the need for closer cooperation in trade, security, and energy policy.
Closer Cooperation with the EU, No Return to Membership
The meeting in Buckinghamshire, around 50 kilometers northwest of London, served as a prelude to Starmer’s visit to Belgium on Monday, where he will hold discussions with EU leaders on strengthening ties between the UK and the bloc.
“A stronger partnership with the EU is in the best interest of both Britain and Europe. Over the past seven months, we have already established a new tone and improved cooperation,” Starmer stated.
While rejoining the EU remains off the table, Starmer reaffirmed his commitment to deepening economic collaboration, enhancing security cooperation, and working closely with the EU on energy policy.
Shared Stance on Global Challenges
Beyond discussions on UK-EU relations, Starmer and Scholz addressed key international security issues, including the war in Ukraine and ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Both leaders stressed the importance of continued support for Kyiv, as the conflict with Russia enters its fourth year.
Scholz praised the meeting as “a strong signal of the close and reliable cooperation between our countries” and highlighted his personal rapport with Starmer.
Following their official talks, the two leaders took a walk around the Chequers estate, followed by a working lunch to further exchange views.
A New Diplomatic Strategy for the UK
The meeting marks a significant shift in Britain’s foreign policy approach. While an EU return is not on the agenda, Starmer’s government is pursuing a pragmatic and constructive relationship with Europe. By fostering closer ties with EU partners, the UK aims to tackle economic and geopolitical challenges together, paving the way for a more stable and productive UK-EU partnership.
