A ski lift collapse at the Astún resort in the Pyrenees injured ten people, with two in critical condition. Emergency teams acted quickly to help the injured and secure the area.

    Immediate Action and Rescue Operations

On Saturday, a mechanical failure at Astún resort caused passengers to fall from the ski lift. Authorities confirmed that 30 individuals were involved. Medical teams transported ten people to the hospital. Among them, two sustained critical injuries, while two others needed urgent attention. Six received treatment for minor injuries, and the remaining 20 were evaluated and allowed to leave.

Miguel Ángel Clavero, the Aragón emergency services chief, explained the cause of the accident. He stated that a failure in the lift’s return system disrupted tension, leading to the collapse. Firefighters, Guardia Civil officers, and resort staff worked together immediately to rescue stranded passengers and bring them to safety.

    Passengers Recall the Frightening Event

Survivors described the chaos as the ski lift failed. María Moreno, one of the passengers, shared her experience: “We heard a loud noise, and the chair suddenly dropped to the ground. It bounced several times, leaving some of us hurt. Others fell from their seats.”

Moreno noted that several people appeared severely injured because parts of the collapsing lift struck them directly. Another witness described how chairs started shaking violently after what seemed like a snapped cable, sending passengers into the air. These firsthand accounts highlight the terrifying moments of the incident.

Rapid Emergency Response and Future Prevention

Emergency crews responded swiftly, deploying five helicopters, 14 ambulances, and a mobile medical unit to the scene. Resort authorities quickly closed the station and evacuated visitors, creating clear access for rescuers. Their rapid coordination ensured timely medical care for the injured and safe evacuation of stranded passengers.

Aragón’s regional president, Jorge Azcón, visited the site to oversee rescue efforts. Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, expressed his condolences and support, stating, “I am deeply concerned about the accident at Astún and have offered the government’s full assistance.”

    Investigation and Focus on Safety

Authorities have started a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Experts are reviewing maintenance protocols and inspecting the equipment to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This accident emphasizes the critical need for stringent safety measures at ski resorts. Officials remain committed to addressing the concerns raised by this tragic event while ensuring safer conditions for visitors. Those injured continue to receive care as the investigation progresses.
