Rudy Giuliani Erupts in Court Over Defamation Case as January Trial Date is Set

Rudy Giuliani lashed out at Judge Lewis Liman during a Manhattan federal court hearing on Tuesday, expressing frustration over a $148 million defamation case filed by Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss. The former New York City mayor and attorney claimed the judge was biased against him after failing to delay the January trial.

Giuliani, 80, argued over the transfer of assets, including the title to his 1980 Mercedes convertible, which he has not provided despite surrendering the car and its keys. Judge Liman questioned Giuliani’s diligence, stating, “Your client is a competent person.” Giuliani retorted, claiming he had applied for the title and accused the court of unfairly insinuating that he was not cooperating.

During the heated exchange, Giuliani denied portraying himself as impoverished, asserting that his assets were tied up. He also alleged, without evidence, that his Social Security account had been restricted. Liman cautioned Giuliani to refrain from further interruptions, threatening action if the outbursts continued.

The trial, set for January 16, will address whether Giuliani can retain items such as his Palm Beach condo and Yankees World Series rings while appealing a separate defamation ruling in Washington, D.C. Giuliani’s bid to delay proceedings to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration was denied, with Judge Liman emphasizing that his “social calendar” was not a valid reason for postponement.

This case follows a prior judgment where Giuliani was found liable for defamation by default after failing to provide evidence during litigation. Freeman and Moss were awarded $148 million in damages after testifying about the harassment they endured due to Giuliani’s false claims of election fraud.

Giuliani’s legal struggles have also led to orders to surrender valuable assets, including his Manhattan apartment and sports memorabilia, further exacerbating the tension surrounding his financial situation.
