Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, said his country will not accept the EU Migration Pact. He firmly rejected any new migrant quotas.
Poland Says No to New Migrant Quotas
Tusk spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. He stated that Poland would not take in more migrants through the EU Pact. Poland has already hosted many Ukrainian refugees, and Tusk said that this put them in a special position.
“Poland won’t take on any extra burdens,” Tusk said. “We are ready to help protect Europe, but we will not accept more migrants.”
Security Fears Behind Poland’s Rejection
Tusk stressed that this was not about politics. He explained that migration from Belarus and Russia is a security threat. Poland is focused on keeping its borders safe.
Von der Leyen praised Poland for taking in Ukrainian refugees. She also said the EU would consider Poland’s efforts when applying the Pact.
Countries facing high migration may get financial help or exemptions. But these details will be clear after the EU’s yearly migration report.
Legal Risks for Rejecting the Pact
The EU Commission warned that countries rejecting the Pact may face legal action. The Pact is mandatory for all 27 EU members. Still, von der Leyen did not push legal threats for Poland, suggesting some flexibility.
Tusk’s strong refusal looks like a way to get a full exemption. It is still unclear if Poland will get help from the Pact despite not following it.
