Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has arrived in the United States for a key meeting with President Donald Trump. Their discussion, set for Tuesday, will focus on Israel’s conflict with Hamas, countering Iran, and expanding ties with Arab nations.
Trump’s First Foreign Leader Meeting
This visit marks Trump’s first official meeting with a foreign leader since starting his second term. Netanyahu called the meeting a “testament to the strong and lasting US-Israel alliance.”
After tensions with the Biden administration, Netanyahu aims to reset diplomatic ties and improve security cooperation with Washington. Before leaving Tel Aviv, he stated, “By working with President Trump, we can strengthen Israel’s security, expand peace, and create stability through strength.”
Netanyahu’s Visit Despite ICC Arrest Warrant
Netanyahu’s Washington trip comes despite an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant issued against him in November 2023. The ICC has also charged former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamasleader Mohammed Deif with war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Since neither Israel nor the US recognizes the ICC, they are not required to enforce the warrants. However, all 27 European Union nations—which support the ICC—would be obligated to arrest Netanyahu if he traveled there.
Trump Challenges ICC, Strengthens Israel Ties
On his first day back in office, Trump signed executive orders, including one to reinstate sanctions against the ICC. However, Senate Democrats blocked the move on Tuesday.
In response, the ICC’s governing body released a statement condemning efforts to undermine its independence and integrity.
Netanyahu’s US visit signals a renewed push for stronger US-Israel relations. Meanwhile, Trump’s opposition to the ICC highlights his broader effort to challenge global institutions critical of his policies.
