Elon Musk ignited debates after making gestures resembling a ‘Nazi’ salute during Trump’s inauguration rally, sparking global reactions.
Musk’s Gesture Sparks Divided Opinions
At the rally, Musk thumped his chest and extended his right arm forward, repeating the motion twice. Critics claim this mimics fascist salutes.
Some historians dismissed claims that Musk intentionally emulated the gesture, calling it an emotional expression without political significance.
The gesture’s resemblance to 20th-century fascist salutes has fueled discussions about its symbolism in modern-day politics.
The Origins of the Salute
The so-called Roman salute was popularized by Mussolini’s fascist regime, though historians argue it was invented in the 19th century.
Nazi Germany adopted a similar gesture as a symbol of allegiance to Adolf Hitler during World War II.
The US once used a “Bellamy salute” for its Pledge of Allegiance but replaced it in 1942 due to its similarity to the fascist salute.
Today, the Nazi salute remains illegal in countries like Germany and Austria and is used by neo-fascist groups worldwide.
Neo-Fascist Groups React
Musk’s gesture, intentional or not, has energized neo-Nazi groups globally. White supremacist group White Lives Matter thanked Musk on Telegram.
The leader of the American neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe said, “I don’t care if it was a mistake. I’ll celebrate it.”
Far-right commentator Evan Kilgore wrote on X: “Did Elon Musk just Heil Hitler? We are so back.”
Kilgore, affiliated with Turning Point USA, attended a pre-inauguration event alongside Donald Trump Jr. and Vice President JD Vance.
Trump’s Stance on Extremist Groups
President Trump recently defended pardoning Capitol attack rioters, including members of Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.
He refused to rule out involving these extremist groups in US politics, further fueling concerns about rising far-right influences.
Both groups participated in the January 2021 riots, with several members released after Trump’s clemency order earlier this week.
