Moldovan President Maia Sandu Re-elected, Condemns Foreign Interference

Maia Sandu has won a second term as Moldova’s president, gaining 55.03% of the vote in a competitive runoff against Alexandr Stoianoglo, a pro-Russia candidate. At her party’s headquarters in Chișinău, Sandu promised to work for all Moldovans while also addressing “hostile interference” that allegedly targeted the election.

Turnout was strong, with around 54% of eligible voters casting ballots, including over 325,000 from Moldova’s diaspora, who strongly supported Sandu. After leading the first round with 42%, Sandu emerged victorious in a race marked by allegations of Russian meddling and vote-buying schemes. Moldova’s president plays a pivotal role in shaping foreign policy, which has become critical as Moldova seeks EU membership.

Authorities in Moldova are investigating various irregularities, including reports of organized voter transport and cyberattacks aimed at disrupting the election. Moldova’s Prime Minister, Dorin Recean, reported “death threats” targeting citizens, aimed at discouraging voter participation. Additionally, prosecutors are investigating a vote-buying network led by exiled oligarch Ilan Shor, who allegedly funneled millions to sway the vote.

Sandu’s government has made EU integration a priority, and this election underscores Moldova’s westward shift amid strained relations with Russia. Moldova achieved EU candidate status in 2022, and membership negotiations began this summer, further solidifying the country’s pro-European stance.
