At the Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in Ramstein, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced new military support for Ukraine. He assured that Germany’s assistance would not waver, even as the country approaches federal elections.
New Commitments to Strengthen Ukraine’s Defence
Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Pistorius reaffirmed Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine. “Germany will stand by Ukraine, no matter the outcome of the February 23 elections,” he stated confidently.
Germany plans to deploy two Patriot missile units and 200 Bundeswehr troops to Poland to secure a key logistics hub. These troops will operate under NATO for six months, reinforcing the alliance’s regional security measures.
In addition to this deployment, Germany will deliver three more IRIS-T SLM and SLS air defence systems to Ukraine. Pistorius also announced plans to provide 13 additional Gepard tanks and extra missiles for the IRIS-T systems. These missiles, originally intended for the Bundeswehr, are part of current production and will be redirected to support Ukraine.
Maintaining Global Support Through Political Changes
Another major topic at the meeting was the impact of Donald Trump’s impending presidency on international support for Ukraine. Pistorius highlighted the importance of continuing the Ukraine Defence Contact Group’s efforts under the new U.S. administration.
While it remains uncertain if the new leadership in Washington will sustain the current format, Pistorius stressed the need for flexibility. He emphasized that, if necessary, the international community should establish a new framework to ensure continued cooperation and support for Ukraine.
Germany’s latest commitments demonstrate its resolve to stand by Ukraine, even as global political dynamics evolve. The announcements at Ramstein reaffirm Germany’s leadership in supporting Ukraine’s defence and fostering international collaboration.
