Opposition leaders arrested in Tbilisi as Georgian police detain Nika Melia and Gigi Ugulawa during mass demonstrations. Protesters demand new elections, accusing the government of fraud and pro-Russian policies. Rising tensions fuel ongoing unrest, with more demonstrations expected.

    Opposition Leaders Detained During Demonstrations

In Tbilisi, Georgian police arrested two opposition leaders during mass protests on Sunday. Nika Melia, leader of the pro-European liberal party Achali, and former Tbilisi mayor Gigi Ugulawa were detained. They attempted to block a highway entrance in the northern part of the city along with thousands of demonstrators.

Authorities also arrested several other protesters. At least one person suffered injuries during the police intervention. The Georgian Interior Ministry had warned demonstrators beforehand that blocking roads was a criminal offense. Violators could face up to four years in prison.

    Tensions Rise After Disputed Election

Since the parliamentary elections on October 26, tensions in Georgia have escalated. The ruling party, Georgian Dream, officially secured a strong majority. However, the opposition claims electoral fraud and demands new elections. Daily protests have erupted across the country, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with the government.

    Fears Over Georgia’s Political Direction

Protesters accuse the government of shifting Georgia away from the European Union and toward closer ties with Russia. Many citizens fear losing progress made toward European integration. These concerns continue to fuel unrest, with no resolution in sight. The situation remains volatile, and further demonstrations are expected.
