A significant rise in flu cases across Europe is straining healthcare systems, with children under 15 and adults over 60 being the most affected. Hospitals are struggling to manage the influx, prompting urgent public health measures and renewed vaccination campaigns.

France and Spain Report Rising Flu Admissions

In France, hospitals are grappling with an alarming surge in flu-related cases, particularly among the elderly. Dr. Jean-Luc Leymarie described the outbreak as the most severe in years. Dr. Olivier Lucidarme emphasized the critical role of vaccination, noting that severe cases often involve unvaccinated individuals.

In Spain, regions such as Catalonia and Valencia are experiencing escalating hospitalizations, with influenza B as the dominant strain. Health officials warn the peak may come in the next week. Despite lower hospital congestion compared to prior flu seasons, authorities stress the importance of maintaining readiness.

    Hungary Enforces Stricter Health Protocols

Hungary has implemented stricter health measures to combat the flu’s spread. In Budapest, clinics now require masks, while hospitals in Győr, Vác, and Debrecen have imposed visitor restrictions. Authorities aim to curb transmission as case numbers climb.

Romania Sees Doubling of Flu Cases and Rising Death Toll

Romania is among the hardest-hit countries, reporting over 4,100 flu cases last week—nearly double the previous week’s total. With four flu-related deaths recorded, Bucharest, Cluj, and Brasov are bearing the brunt of the epidemic.

As schools reopen, health officials expect cases to rise further. Over 1.1 million flu vaccines have been administered in Romania this season, including a needle-free nasal spray option for children aged 2–18. Officials emphasize vaccination as the most effective preventive measure.

    Experts Stress Vaccination and Preparedness

Medical experts across Europe are urging the public to prioritize vaccination, especially for vulnerable populations. Vaccination not only protects individuals but also alleviates pressure on healthcare systems already stretched thin by the outbreak.

As hospitals contend with this severe flu epidemic, authorities remind citizens to adhere to public health guidelines, seek vaccination, and remain vigilant to reduce the virus’s spread.
