The European Union is stepping up its game. With IRIS², a new satellite initiative, secure and resilient communication will soon become a reality.

“This is a defining moment,” said Andrius Kubilius, EU Defence and Space Commissioner. “For the first time, our space program directly addresses Europe’s defense needs.” In an era of growing threats, reliable communication is non-negotiable.

A New Era for Europe’s Security

The project will see 290 satellites launched starting in 2029. Full operation is planned for 2030. Josef Aschbacher, ESA’s Director General, said: “IRIS² boosts Europe’s competitiveness and resilience. It ensures stable communication, even in challenging conditions.”

The program costs €11 billion, funded by €6 billion from the EU, €4.1 billion from private investors, and additional contributions from ESA.

An EU representative explained: “IRIS² uses satellites across different orbits.” 264 satellites will operate at 1,200 kilometers, while 18 will be mid-orbit, and 10 will orbit closer to Earth. This design ensures seamless global coverage.

Data will flow through ground stations in France, Italy, and Luxembourg. Nations like Japan and Australia have already shown interest in joining the service.

“We need independence,” Kubilius stressed. “IRIS² will safeguard Europe’s future and cement its leadership in secure communications.”
