Elon Musk voiced support for Germany’s far-right AfD party during a campaign event in Halle, calling it the nation’s “best hope.” His comments on preserving German culture and free speech drew backlash amid mass protests and concerns over political interference. Debate intensifies over Musk’s growing influence in German politics.
Tycoon Advocates for German Culture
Elon Musk made an unexpected appearance during the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) campaign event in Halle, eastern Germany, on Saturday. Speaking via video link to an audience of 4,500, Musk expressed support for the far-right party for the second time in two weeks.
Musk, alongside AfD co-leader Alice Weidel, emphasized the importance of preserving German culture and values. “It’s good to be proud of German culture, German values, and not to lose that in some sort of multiculturalism that dilutes everything,” Musk declared.
Comments on History and Free Speech
Musk touched on Germany’s Nazi past, stating that “children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great grandparents.” He argued that there is excessive focus on historical guilt and called for Germany to move beyond it.
The billionaire also criticized the current German government for suppressing free speech, taking aim at Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Musk has previously voiced opposition to Scholz on his platform, X. In response, Scholz recently stated that freedom of speech should not be used to support far-right ideologies.
Elon Musk AfD Support
Musk openly endorsed the AfD, calling it Germany’s “best hope” for a bright future. “I’m very excited for the AfD,” he told attendees. Weidel thanked Musk for his support, referencing the Republican Party’s slogan under Donald Trump and urging her supporters to “make Germany great again.”
Public Backlash and Protests
Musk’s remarks came amidst widespread protests against the far-right. Around 100,000 anti-AfD demonstrators gathered near Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, and up to 20,000 people protested in Cologne. Protesters of all ages, many carrying colorful umbrellas, braved the winter weather to voice their opposition.
Musk’s increasing involvement in German politics, including hosting Weidel for an interview on X earlier this month, has raised concerns about potential election interference. His latest appearance has only fueled the ongoing debate surrounding his influence and the rise of the AfD in Germany.
