    CNN Host shocked over Gaetz

CNN host Jake Tapper expressed shock after President-elect Donald Trump named Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as his choice for attorney general, a decision that stirred bipartisan reactions. Tapper, surprised by the announcement, opened his segment by noting he’d “never contemplated” the phrase “U.S. Attorney General Matt Gaetz.”

Trump’s nomination of the loyal Florida congressman came as Gaetz immediately resigned from Congress, ending an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation. The inquiry, which began in 2021, involved allegations of sexual misconduct, drug use, and improper influence. With his resignation, the Ethics Committee no longer holds jurisdiction over Gaetz, effectively halting the investigation.

Trump hailed Gaetz as a “gifted and tenacious attorney” who he believes will counter “Weaponized Government” and “restore faith” in the Department of Justice (DOJ). Gaetz, who has often aligned with Trump on legal issues, pledged to address perceived partisan biases within the DOJ if confirmed.

Reactions among Republican legislators were mixed. Some expressed support, while others voiced concerns, with some Senate Republicans reportedly apprehensive about Gaetz’s ability to secure a confirmation vote. Trump’s announcement also prompted laughter among GOP House members, who reacted with surprise at the news.

If confirmed, Gaetz would succeed current AG Merrick Garland, whom Trump has repeatedly criticized, notably over DOJ probes related to Trump and other Republicans. Gaetz’s nomination underscores Trump’s commitment to placing loyal allies in top positions, as he aims to reshape the DOJ and take a more aggressive stance on law enforcement issues.
