A tragic incident unfolded in Munich on Thursday morning when a car drove into a crowd of demonstrators, leaving many injured, including children. The attack, which took place during a protest organized by the Verdi trade union, has shaken the city and sparked political discussions.

    Attack During Verdi Protest

At around 10:30 AM on Seidlstraße, a Mini Cooper sped into a group of demonstrators demanding better wages. Witnesses described how the vehicle suddenly accelerated, hitting multiple people before coming to a stop. Emergency responders arrived quickly, providing medical assistance and securing the scene.

Authorities confirmed that 28 individuals were injured in the incident. Among them, two people sustained critical injuries. Several children were also harmed, adding to the gravity of the situation. Politicians, including local and national leaders, arrived at the scene to assess the situation and give public statements.

    Suspect Arrested, Motive Still Unclear

The driver, a 24-year-old Afghan man, was arrested at the scene. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder ruled out the possibility of an accident, stating that the act appeared to be deliberate. However, the suspect’s exact motive remains under investigation.

The man had been living legally in Munich with a valid residence and work permit. Authorities confirmed that he had no prior criminal record, though some media outlets reported that he had made Islamist-related posts on social media. The police are analyzing these claims and investigating potential links to extremist ideologies.

    Shock and Political Reactions

The attack has deeply affected Munich, with Mayor Dieter Reiter calling it a “dark day for the city.” He expressed condolences to the victims and their families. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann praised emergency responders and law enforcement for their swift reaction.

The incident has reignited political debates on migration policies in Germany. Prime Minister Söder emphasized the need for stricter immigration controls but refrained from placing direct blame on specific policies or groups. Other politicians urged caution and called for a thorough investigation before drawing conclusions.

Increased Security Amid Munich Security Conference

The attack has raised security concerns, especially with the upcoming Munich Security Conference. Authorities have already announced heightened security measures to ensure public safety during the high-profile event.

While the police continue their investigation, residents of Munich are left to process the shocking incident. The city, known for its vibrant culture and peaceful protests, now faces tough questions about security, integration, and social stability.
