President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as Attorney General in a move that surprised many. Trump announced the selection on Truth Social, calling it a “great honor.” Gaetz, known for his staunch support of Trump, quickly responded, expressing enthusiasm about the role.
While Gaetz hadn’t been rumored for the position, he had been involved in advising Trump on administration choices at Mar-a-Lago. Other names reportedly considered included former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
The news reportedly sparked mixed reactions among Republicans on Capitol Hill. Some expressed amusement or even disbelief, while others, like Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), voiced concern. Collins stated the Senate confirmation process would raise significant questions. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) was also surprised by the choice, suggesting a desire for a more “serious” candidate. However, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) speculated that Trump could appoint Gaetz without Senate approval through a recess appointment.
One GOP aide privately expressed fear of openly criticizing Gaetz’s nomination due to potential repercussions, while another predicted Gaetz would fail to gain confirmation in the GOP-led Senate. This nomination, according to the aide, could be part of Gaetz’s strategy to gain traction for a 2026 gubernatorial run in Florida. However, some Democrats, including Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.), defended Gaetz, calling him loyal and competent.
Gaetz, who has vocally supported Trump in various investigations, is known for his hard-right views and clashes with GOP leaders, including former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. His criticism of McCarthy contributed to the latter’s ousting in 2023.
In Trump’s statement, he praised Gaetz as a tenacious attorney who would help end the “Weaponization of our Justice System” and restore public faith in the Department of Justice.
