Adrian Newey has fully committed to designing Aston Martin’s 2026 Formula One car, aiming to build a vehicle that could attract Max Verstappen away from Red Bull. Speaking at the Monaco Grand Prix, Newey described his work as a “design trance,” spending nearly all his time since March focused on shaping Aston Martin’s future in F1.

Newey, who helped Verstappen win four world championships at Red Bull, knows that the Dutch driver will only consider switching teams if the car can compete for titles. “Max is a phenomenal talent and he wants the fastest car,” Newey said. “If we want to attract him, we have to build it first.”

After moving from Red Bull to Aston Martin in 2024, Newey has taken on a key role in the team’s transformation. He is working almost exclusively on the 2026 car, which will compete under new Formula One rules. His contract reportedly pays him £30 million per year and includes a share in the team. Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll was instrumental in recruiting Newey, hoping his expertise will help the team challenge for championships.

Newey praised Aston Martin’s modern facilities, including what he called the best wind tunnel and factory in Formula One. However, he stressed that success depends on the people behind the design, not just the tools. “It’s not the wind tunnel that makes the difference. It’s the human element,” he said.
