Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has signed a new two-year contract extension, ending months of speculation about his future. The deal, finalized in early April after a breakthrough in negotiations during March, keeps the Egyptian forward at Anfield until 2027. Salah, now in his eighth year at the club, had expressed both a desire to stay and uncertainty about his role. The agreement ensures he will complete a full decade with Liverpool, a rare feat in modern football.

    Long-Awaited Agreement Sealed in March

Discussions between Salah, his agent Ramy Abbas Issa, and Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes reached a turning point in late March. After months of back-and-forth, both sides found common ground. Final details were completed this week, marking the official confirmation of Salah’s stay.

The forward had hinted last November that he was “more out than in,” stirring questions among fans and media. Yet those close to him say that his wish to continue at Liverpool never wavered. The challenge lay in finding the right balance between commitment and reward.

Liverpool Makes Rare Exception for a Legend

Salah’s new contract includes a weekly wage close to £400,000, placing him among the Premier League’s top earners. The deal is exceptional—not only because of the amount but also due to Salah’s age. At 32, few players receive such long-term offers. Liverpool made this decision carefully, not emotionally. Salah’s 54 goal contributions this season—goals and assists combined—proved that he remains one of the most effective players in the world.

Letting him go would have created a massive gap. The club’s financial flexibility, partly made possible by the likely transfer of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, helped pave the way. That move allowed Liverpool to structure long-term deals not just for Salah, but also for captain Virgil van Dijk, who is expected to renew his contract soon.

    Motivation Goes Beyond Money

Salah could have accepted a massive offer from the Saudi Pro League. Officials from Saudi Arabia were still hopeful of securing his transfer as recently as last week. Reports suggest that Salah could have earned more than £500 million had he accepted.

However, those close to the player insist that money was not his main motivator. Salah wants to compete at the highest level in Europe. He believes he still has much to achieve in top-tier football. His goals include winning Liverpool’s 20th league title, lifting another Champions League trophy, and competing for the Ballon d’Or—a dream he came close to in 2019 and 2022, when he finished fifth.

A Strategic Move Ahead of International Challenges

Another reason behind Salah’s decision is his commitment to Egypt’s national team. He wants to stay sharp by playing against the best. Competing in the Premier League and Champions League offers him top-level preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup.

Family life also played a key role. Salah, his wife Magi, and their daughters Makka and Kayan are settled in Merseyside. The comfort and happiness they have found in Liverpool influenced his decision to stay.

    A Decade of Dominance?

With this new contract, Salah is set to become one of Liverpool’s longest-serving modern players. By 2027, he will have spent ten full years at the club—an era marked by record-breaking performances, trophies, and unforgettable moments.

His physical fitness and professionalism continue to set him apart. Coaches and fitness experts believe Salah can perform at an elite level for at least three more years.

By renewing his contract, Salah signals his belief in Liverpool’s future. The club’s fans, meanwhile, can look forward to seeing their star striker lead the charge as Liverpool fights for titles at home and abroad.
