Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant due to a “crisis of trust” arising from growing tensions with Hamas and internal disagreements over military strategy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu surprised many by dismissing Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday. He cited a “crisis of trust” amid rising tensions with Hamas in Gaza and growing conflicts in the Middle East.

Netanyahu named Foreign Minister Israel Katz to replace Gallant. He explained that their relationship had soured in recent months. “In the midst of a war, more than ever, full trust is required between the prime minister and defence minister,” Netanyahu said. He emphasized the importance of cohesion in Israel’s leadership team.

Clashing Approaches to the War with Hamas

Gallant and Netanyahu had frequently clashed over the approach to the war with Hamas, now in its second year. Netanyahu consistently advocated for intensified military actions. Gallant, on the other hand, believed that military pressure should be combined with diplomacy. He argued this could potentially lead to the release of hostages held by Hamas. Despite their disagreements, Netanyahu had refrained from dismissing Gallant until now.

    Gallant’s Dismissal Amid Broader Tensions

Gallant’s dismissal also comes amid broader tensions. He had openly opposed Netanyahu’s proposed judicial reforms. Earlier this year, Netanyahu’s attempt to dismiss Gallant sparked protests. Demonstrators criticized Netanyahu’s handling of the October 7 attack by Hamas and his management of the hostage crisis.

Gallant, a former naval commando and senior IDF officer, had been a significant figure in Israeli security. His departure represents a major shakeup in Israel’s defense leadership.

    New Leadership Appointments

Following Gallant’s dismissal, Gideon Saar, a former rival of Netanyahu, will take over Katz’s position as Foreign Minister. Gallant responded by reaffirming his commitment to Israel’s security. “The security of the State of Israel always was, and will always remain, my life’s mission,” he said.

As tensions in Gaza continue to escalate, Netanyahu’s reshuffle signals a shift in both defense strategy and Israel’s internal politics.
