A devastating fire at a nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, has killed at least 51 people and injured more than 118. The blaze broke out around 02:30 (01:30 GMT) at the Pulse club, located about 100 km (60 miles) east of the capital, Skopje. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire, which occurred during a concert attended by approximately 1,500 people.

    The Concert Turned Tragedy:

The fire erupted during a performance by DNK, a popular hip-hop duo in North Macedonia. As the concert was underway, pyrotechnic devices sparked a blaze that quickly spread across the nightclub’s roof. Panic ensued as concertgoers scrambled to escape the rapidly intensifying flames. Videos posted on social media captured the terrifying scene, showing flames engulfing the building as people rushed to safety.

According to Interior Minister Pance Toskovski, the fire began when sparks from pyrotechnics hit a highly flammable ceiling material. Authorities have arrested one individual in connection with the incident, but their role remains unclear.

    A Nation Mourns:

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski described the incident as a “heartbreaking and painful day” for North Macedonia. He expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims, many of whom were young people between the ages of 14 and 24.

    Medical Response and Ongoing Investigation:

Local hospitals, especially Kocani’s main hospital, have been overwhelmed by the number of injured. Of the 118 injured, 90 patients were admitted to Kocani’s hospital, many suffering from severe burns. Eighteen of these patients remain in critical condition and have been transferred to medical facilities in Skopje for advanced treatment.

Hospital director Kristina Serafimova revealed the difficulty in identifying victims due to missing identification documents, highlighting the devastating impact on families waiting for news about their loved ones.

A team of investigators has been dispatched to examine the cause of the fire and ensure accountability. Prime Minister Mickoski assured the public that the government is “fully mobilized and committed to addressing the aftermath and uncovering the causes of this tragedy.”

    The Legacy of DNK:

DNK, established in 2002, is a highly popular hip-hop duo in North Macedonia, known for dominating the country’s music charts over the past decade. This tragic incident occurred during one of their concerts, marking a dark chapter in the nation’s cultural scene.

As North Macedonia grieves this tragedy, officials continue to investigate the causes and provide assistance to the victims. The tragedy has raised concerns about safety measures at public venues and the use of pyrotechnics during performances.
