An Iranian student has been arrested after partially stripping naked on a university campus in a bold protest against strict dress code regulations. According to Amnesty Iran, the protest was sparked by the woman’s experience of physical harassment by security officers for allegedly wearing her hijab incorrectly.
Footage of the incident, shared on social media platform X, shows students in a classroom overlooking the Tehran Islamic Azad University campus witnessing the demonstration. The video has gained significant attention, with many praising the student for her courage and boldness.
Amnesty Iran has called for her immediate and unconditional release, highlighting the need for protection from “torture and other ill-treatment” while she is in custody. The organization also demanded that she be allowed access to her family and legal counsel, insisting that allegations of beatings and sexual violence during her arrest must be investigated independently and thoroughly.
Syed Amir Mahjoub, the university’s public relations director, stated that security officers had handed the student over to the police, denying any physical altercation. He mentioned that preliminary investigations indicated the woman might suffer from a psychological disorder and was in a state of severe distress at the time of the incident.
Reports from local news sources suggest that she was arrested by intelligence agents and has since been transferred to an undisclosed location. Additionally, a university-affiliated newspaper indicated that she has been moved to a psychiatric hospital for care. No further details regarding her identity have been disclosed at this time.
