Las Vegas, Nevada – Magomed Ankalaev shocked the MMA world by defeating Alex Pereira via unanimous decision to claim the UFC light-heavyweight championship at UFC 313. The Russian fighter dominated the contest with relentless pressure, limiting Pereira’s ability to unleash his signature power shots.

Judges scored the fight 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46 in favor of Ankalaev, marking the biggest win of his career.

“I can’t describe this feeling. I waited so long for this moment, and now the title is mine,” Ankalaev said in his post-fight interview.

“Nothing surprised me tonight. I could have done better, but I’m happy to be the champion. Thanks to my team, Russia, and Dagestan—we have another belt!”

    Ankalaev’s Pressure Neutralizes Pereira’s Striking

Pereira’s rapid rise in the UFC saw him become a two-division champion in just seven fights, setting a record for the fastest route to double-champ status. After winning the middleweight title, he moved up to light-heavyweight, where he captured the belt and defended it three times in 2023, earning UFC Fighter of the Year honors.

However, Ankalaev proved to be a different kind of challenge. While many expected his wrestling to be the key factor, it was his striking pressure that dictated the fight.

Pereira, a former two-time kickboxing world champion, struggled to establish control as Ankalaev stayed aggressive and constantly pushed forward. The Russian fighter extended his unbeaten streak to 12 fights, making up for his controversial split draw against Jan Blachowicz in 2022.

A Tactical Battle Seals Pereira’s Fate

Pereira started strong, utilizing his signature powerful leg kicks to inflict visible damage on Ankalaev’s calf early in the fight. However, Ankalaev adjusted his approach in the second round, landing precise punch combinations. A straight left hand from the Russian briefly rocked Pereira just before the bell.

Pereira recovered well and continued targeting Ankalaev’s legs. However, the challenger responded by mixing up his striking and grappling, pressing Pereira against the cage to drain his energy. In the final moments, Pereira attempted a high kick and landed a sharp jab, but Ankalaev quickly regained control, keeping the fight in his favor until the final bell.

Both fighters raised their hands in victory, but the judges unanimously declared Ankalaev the winner, ending Pereira’s reign at light-heavyweight.

What’s Next for Ankalaev and Pereira?

With this victory, Ankalaev cements his place at the top of the light-heavyweight division and continues his quest for dominance. The Dagestani fighter’s well-rounded skills and tactical pressure make him a formidable champion moving forward.

As for Pereira, the loss marks the end of a dominant title run, but he remains one of the most dangerous strikers in MMA. The Brazilian has already expressed his determination to return stronger.

“I knew this would be a war,” Pereira said. “He pressured me in the second round, but when he put me against the cage, he didn’t do much. I’m going to keep training. I’ll take a few days off, then get back to work. This is my life.”

Co-Main Event Recap: Justin Gaethje Returns to Winning Ways

In the co-main event, Justin Gaethje delivered an impressive striking performance against Rafael Fiziev. The 36-year-old American secured a decision victory, bouncing back from a knockout loss to Max Holloway a year ago.

With UFC 313 in the books, the light-heavyweight division has a new king, and the MMA world eagerly awaits what’s next for both Ankalaev and Pereira.
