Fraudsters used AI-generated voices to impersonate Italy’s Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, tricking top entrepreneurs into sending money for a fake ransom.

Criminals Demand €1 Million for Fake Hostage Release

Scammers made phone calls pretending to be Crosetto, asking victims to transfer €1 million to a Hong Kong bank account. They claimed the money was needed to free kidnapped journalists.

Fashion mogul Giorgio Armani, former Inter Milan owner Massimo Moratti, and Prada co-founder Patrizio Bertelli were among those targeted.

Crosetto Exposes Scam and Alerts Authorities

The fraud came to light when a businessman called Crosetto’s office to verify a suspicious request. The minister confirmed he had never made such a call.

Realizing the scam was widespread, Crosetto warned the public. He later learned that one entrepreneur had already transferred money, believing he had spoken to him directly.

Authorities Investigate as Victims File Complaints

Italian investigators are now tracking the perpetrators and reviewing complaints from victims. It is unclear whether the scammers used pre-recorded AI voices or a real-time voice filter.

Massimo Moratti, the Beretta family, and the Aleotti family have formally reported the fraud. More victims may come forward as the investigation continues.
