How Apple’s New AirPods Feature Can Assist Those with Hearing Loss

Apple has introduced a new software update that allows certain AirPods models, specifically the AirPods Pro 2, to function as hearing aids, requiring an iPhone or iPad for setup. This innovation could significantly benefit millions who experience hearing loss.

According to the U.S. National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, many individuals could gain from using hearing aids, yet a substantial number have never tried them. Barriers such as high costs, poor quality, discomfort, aesthetics, and other reasons contribute to this trend.

Understanding Hearing Loss and Its Impacts

An estimated 11.1% of individuals across the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, and the UK report experiencing hearing loss, as noted in a June 2020 report. While most affected are over 60, hearing issues can impact people of all ages. Research indicates that men and those living in rural areas may be more prone to hearing loss.

Hearing loss is linked to various health issues, including social isolation, depression, and cognitive decline. It increases the risk of dementia and can also heighten the risk of falls, particularly concerning for older adults. Barbara Kelley, executive director of the Hearing Loss Association of America, stresses the importance of addressing hearing health early to maintain relationships and overall well-being.

How the Apple AirPods Hearing Aid Feature Works

Apple’s Hearing Test and Aid features are expected to receive marketing authorization from global health authorities soon and will be available this fall in over 100 countries, including the U.S., Germany, and Japan, as well as multiple European nations like Denmark and Finland.

To use the hearing aid feature, users must have AirPods Pro 2 and an iPhone or iPad. The process begins with built-in tests that help users assess their hearing and set personalized amplification levels if hearing loss is detected.

Experts believe that this integration into a widely-used product like AirPods can help normalize the use of hearing aids. Kelley remarked on the importance of making hearing aids mainstream, as the popularity of AirPods may encourage individuals to overcome aesthetic concerns about traditional hearing aids.

    Potential Drawbacks

Despite the benefits, there are limitations. Traditional hearing aids are often designed for longer battery life, whereas the battery life of AirPods may not support all-day use. Additionally, wearing earbuds can signal to others that the wearer prefers not to engage in conversation. However, audiologist Elizabeth Stangl expressed hope that more people will try the AirPods feature and recognize its advantages.

Alternative Smartphone Solutions for Hearing Improvement

Even without the latest technology, smartphones can be valuable tools for those with hearing loss. Many smartphones offer speech-to-text capabilities, enhancing communication. The iPhone’s “Live Listen” feature allows users to use their device as a microphone, amplifying speech in noisy environments.

Various apps can assist further, such as those that vibrate the phone for alarms or notifications. Catherine Palmer, director of audiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, notes that many people are unaware of their phone’s capabilities, including serving as an effective amplifier for those with mild to moderate hearing loss. This accessibility can significantly improve hearing care for many individuals.
