Columbia University suspended one student following a rapid investigation into a class disruption about Israeli history.

Flyers With Violent Imagery Distributed in Class

Demonstrators handed out flyers with violent images during a History of Modern Israel class on Tuesday. One flyer depicted a burning Israeli flag with the words “Burn Zionism to the Ground.” Another showed a black boot about to crush the Jewish Star of David, reading “Crush Zionism.”

Student Elisha Baker, present in the class, described the event as shocking. “I’m still excited for the class, but this incident has put us on edge,” Baker said.

Protesters entered during the first session of Professor Avi Shilon’s course, wearing face coverings and keffiyehs, a symbol often linked to Palestinian identity. Four protesters left after five minutes, and campus security arrived soon after. Students provided photos, videos, and accounts to assist the investigation.

    University Condemns Antisemitism and Disruption

Columbia’s interim president, Katrina Armstrong, emphasized that disrupting classes violates student rights. “Antisemitism, harassment, or intimidation within our community is unacceptable,” Armstrong stated.

The university heightened security and intensified efforts to identify the involved individuals. Officials confirmed the suspension of one student pending further review but did not disclose their identity. Columbia has not determined if the other protesters are students.

The disruption follows years of tensions at Columbia related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Last year saw protests, arrests, and faculty resignations tied to accusations of antisemitism. In one incident, Columbia banned a pro-Palestinian activist who called for violence against Zionists. The university denounced all calls for violence in its statement.
