The trial of French actor Gérard Depardieu began today in Paris. He faces charges of sexually assaulting two women on a film set in 2021. The 75-year-old actor will not attend court due to reported health issues.

    Allegations Against Depardieu

Depardieu denies all accusations, but prosecutors claim he used “violence, coercion, surprise, or threat” against the alleged victims. The incidents reportedly occurred during the filming of Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters). Prosecutors allege that Depardieu trapped the women between his legs and groped them over their clothing.

One alleged victim is a 53-year-old production designer. Witnesses say she struggled to free herself from Depardieu’s grip and appeared visibly shaken. After the incident, an apology was arranged, but the victim later described it as insincere. During a TV interview, she said Depardieu blamed her for the situation. Witnesses confirmed his comments did not qualify as an apology, according to prosecutors.

Depardieu’s lawyer, Jérémie Assous, insists the actor is innocent. He stated that evidence and witnesses will prove the accusations are false.

    Broader Context and Public Reaction

The court’s timeline for a ruling is uncertain. If found guilty, Depardieu could face up to five years in prison.

The trial occurs amid France’s ongoing battle with sexual violence, particularly within the film industry. The #MeToo movement has amplified calls for justice. Despite the charges, Depardieu has received support from notable figures, including French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron’s reference to Depardieu as “the pride of France” has sparked criticism. Activists argue that such praise undermines efforts to combat violence against women.

In 2022, 56 French artists, writers, and producers defended Depardieu in a public essay. They argued that targeting him threatened the art of cinema. This defense followed a France 2 documentary where 16 women accused Depardieu of inappropriate behavior, including misconduct during a 2018 trip to North Korea.

Depardieu was charged with rape and sexual assault in 2021. This followed a reopened investigation from 2018, which initially closed after accusations from actress Charlotte Arnould. In 2022, Depardieu declared in an open letter published in Le Figaro, “I have never, ever abused a woman.”

Feminist groups have organized a protest outside the courthouse ahead of the hearings. Their presence reflects ongoing public pressure for accountability in cases of sexual violence.
