Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk made an unannounced visit to Lviv on Tuesday, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Tusk reaffirmed Poland’s steadfast support for Ukraine in its ongoing resistance against Russia’s invasion.
“Despite our complex past, we are united,” Tusk said. “These are moments when trust and solidarity make us stronger.”
Poland to Drive Ukraine’s European Ambitions
With Poland preparing to assume the presidency of the EU Council in January, Tusk vowed to prioritize Ukraine’s EU accession process.
“We aim to make Ukraine’s path to Europe more concrete and achievable,” Tusk declared. He also reiterated Poland’s commitment to Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, acknowledging that progress would require patience and resolve.
Tusk further announced increased military support and the opening of a new border crossing to facilitate closer collaboration between Poland and Ukraine.
Zelenskyy Thanks Poland for Unwavering Support
President Zelenskyy praised Poland for its consistent backing since the start of the war. He highlighted Poland’s pivotal role in supporting Ukraine’s defense and integration into NATO.
“Poland recognizes the need for true security guarantees,” Zelenskyy said. “Your support for our NATO membership is a cornerstone of our shared stability.”
Toward Peace: A United Front
Tusk spoke about upcoming peace initiatives Poland plans to advance during its EU Council presidency. Zelenskyy, however, underscored the importance of a permanent resolution over temporary solutions.
“We cannot settle for a pause in hostilities,” Zelenskyy stated. “Only a united and determined effort from our partners can secure lasting peace and stability.”
