Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has resigned as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, signaling a renewed focus on domestic governance and national stability.

Meloni Announces Resignation at Party Festival

Meloni made the announcement on Sunday during the annual youth festival of her Brothers of Italy party in Rome. The event, attended by over 300 guests, including opposition members and Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, served as a platform to showcase her government’s achievements.

Meloni highlighted the importance of political stability for enhancing Italy’s credibility on both national and international stages. Confident in her administration’s strength, she expressed her belief that the government would serve its full term.

Support for Morawiecki as New ECR President

As she steps down, Meloni endorsed Mateusz Morawiecki of Poland to take over as the next leader of the ECR group. This move reflects her strategy to maintain influence in European conservative politics while dedicating more attention to Italy’s internal affairs.

Lebanon Acknowledges Italy’s Role in Peacekeeping

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati praised Italy’s contributions to the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon. He emphasized that the mission is critical to maintaining a fragile ceasefire in the region.

Mikati also highlighted the need for the European Union to play a role in supporting the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, stressing the importance of regional stability and cooperation.

Meloni’s decision to resign from the ECR leadership underscores her commitment to ensuring Italy’s stability while balancing international responsibilities.
