Advanced AI Camera to Catch Drink-Drivers in UK Trial

New Technology Targets Impaired Drivers

A new AI camera aims to detect drink and drug-drivers in Devon and Cornwall. This world-first trial seeks to improve road safety.

The Heads-Up camera identifies driving behaviors linked to alcohol or drug use. Police stop vehicles, question drivers, and conduct roadside tests.

Geoff Collins, UK general manager of Acusensus, said, “We are excited to trial this technology in Devon and Cornwall.”

The mobile camera can be deployed on any road in both counties. Drivers remain unaware until police pull them over.

“Detecting impairment early prevents incidents that could ruin lives,” Mr. Collins added.

Boosting Road Safety Through Innovation

Acusensus cameras have previously caught drivers using phones or not wearing seatbelts. The new system focuses on impaired drivers.

Drink-drivers are six times more likely to cause fatal crashes. Police hope the system will reduce fatalities and serious injuries.

Superintendent Simon Jenkinson emphasized the camera’s role. “Our officers can’t be everywhere,” he said. His team patrols 14,000 miles of roads in Devon and Cornwall.

“As part of the Vision Zero South West partnership, we aim to reduce road deaths and injuries,” he added. “Adopting new technology like this is crucial.”

The trial runs throughout December alongside other drink-driving campaigns. Authorities will assess its impact on driver behavior and road safety.
