Google is pushing forward with its next generation of AI technology despite facing a potential breakup by US regulators. On Wednesday, Google unveiled Gemini 2.0, the latest evolution in its artificial intelligence tools. This new AI platform aims to tackle tasks traditionally performed by humans and simplify complex processes.
Gemini 2.0 features tools designed to interpret smartphone images, perform repetitive chores, assist in video game strategies, and conduct advanced online searches. Google CEO Sundar Pichai described the technology as capable of understanding the world better, thinking ahead, and taking action under user supervision. This innovation places Google in direct competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s AI-driven tools for Windows.
New Features and Competitive Expansion
Google’s Gemini 2.0 features will initially roll out to test groups and Gemini Advanced subscribers, with limited tools accessible through its search engine and apps. Broader releases are planned for next year, integrating Gemini 2.0 across free platforms like Chrome, YouTube, and Google Maps. Google’s advancements aim to outpace rivals such as Apple, which is blending AI into its devices, including iPhones.
While advancing AI, Google also faces antitrust scrutiny in the US. The Justice Department wants to break up Google, citing abusive practices tied to its dominant search engine. A federal judge ruled Google’s search engine as an illegal monopoly in a historic antitrust case earlier this year.
Google Faces Antitrust Battle
The US Department of Justice proposes forcing Google to sell or spin off parts of its business, including Chrome. The agency claims Google’s dominance stifled competition and innovation. Google has criticized the proposal as excessive and vowed to fight the decision in federal court next spring.
Even if a breakup is mandated, Google could appeal, potentially delaying the resolution for years while continuing its AI expansion. Pichai expressed optimism, stating in a blog post, “I can’t wait to see what this next era brings,” signaling Google’s confidence in its ability to forge ahead despite regulatory challenges.
