Police are investigating the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, using advanced technology and forensic evidence. Thompson, 50, was shot on Wednesday morning outside a Manhattan hotel.
The Shooting and Escape
The attack occurred around 6:45 a.m. EST near Times Square and Central Park. Thompson was preparing to speak at an investor conference later that day. Surveillance footage shows the suspect waiting outside the Hilton hotel for about five minutes.
The attacker, wearing a black face mask and a light-colored jacket, shot Thompson in the back and leg. Despite quick medical intervention, Thompson was pronounced dead 30 minutes later at a hospital.
Police Chief Joseph Kenny stated that the gun briefly jammed during the attack but was swiftly repaired by the shooter. The weapon appeared to have a silencer attached.
Video footage captured the suspect fleeing on foot. Initial reports suggested he used an electric Citi Bike, but Lyft later clarified that none of its bikes were involved.
The Investigation
Police are focusing on key pieces of evidence to identify the suspect. Surveillance images show the attacker inside a Starbucks just before the shooting. Although masked, parts of his face are visible, and police are using facial recognition technology to find a match.
Forensic teams are analyzing three bullet casings and three live rounds from the scene. The casings bear the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” according to media reports.
A mobile phone found along the suspect’s escape route may provide crucial leads. Investigators are also examining Thompson’s hotel room at the nearby Marriott.
The Motive Remains Unclear
Thompson had been with UnitedHealth since 2004 and became CEO in 2021, overseeing significant company growth. Despite his high-profile position, police have not determined a motive for the killing.
The attacker did not steal any of Thompson’s belongings, suggesting a targeted, premeditated attack. Thompson’s wife told MSNBC he had mentioned receiving threats but did not share specific details.
In 2018, a suspicious incident occurred at Thompson’s Minnesota home, but it was resolved without any criminal findings. Police have not linked that event to his recent murder.
