As a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah allows displaced Lebanese to return home, the World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded the alarm over critical health challenges in the war-torn country.
Months of conflict have left Lebanon’s healthcare system in shambles, with 158 attacks on facilities killing 241 people and injuring nearly 300. The WHO reports that 10% of hospitals are damaged, and health workers, many displaced themselves, face immense challenges in restoring services.
While some hospitals in Beirut may reopen within weeks, others will require months of repairs. Mobile clinics are being deployed to address urgent needs, but WHO officials stress that the humanitarian crisis will worsen as winter approaches and resources dwindle.
Calling for a lasting peace, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that “the ultimate solution is not aid, but peace.”
