Black Friday vs. Cyber Monday: Which Offers the Best Deals?

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are part of the same extended shopping weekend. However, which one truly has better deals? Once separate events, their sales now often overlap. Retailers have begun launching Black Friday deals early and extending Cyber Monday discounts beyond Monday itself. With millions shopping, knowing the differences is essential.

Black Friday: Origins and 2024 Date

Black Friday takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is Nov. 29, 2024. The term originated in the 1950s when Philadelphia police described the chaos of post-Thanksgiving shopping. By the late 1980s, retailers embraced the name, highlighting how sales moved businesses from “in the red” (losses) to “in the black” (profits). Traditionally an in-store shopping event, Black Friday now includes significant online deals.

In 2024, 131.7 million people (72%) plan to shop on Black Friday. Many are drawn by “too good to pass up” deals, as reported by 57% of shoppers. Key retailers like Walmart, Target, and Best Buy offer steep discounts during this time.

Cyber Monday: Digital Deals and 2024 Date

Cyber Monday follows Thanksgiving weekend, landing on Dec. 2, 2024. Created in 2005 by the National Retail Federation, it responded to increased online shopping on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Originally marketed to office workers with fast internet, it has become a major retail event.

Cyber Monday now rivals Black Friday in popularity. About 72.3 million shoppers (39%) plan to participate in 2024. Retailers like Amazon and Target offer deep discounts across categories, including electronics, home goods, and fashion.

Comparing the Two: Which Day Wins?

Once distinct, Black Friday and Cyber Monday now blend into a continuous shopping spree. Events like Amazon’s “Black Friday Week” seamlessly transition into Cyber Monday, running from Nov. 21 through Dec. 2. Retailers often rebrand deals for the new promotion, but some discounts are exclusive to specific days.

Both days cater to different shopping habits. Black Friday is ideal for in-store experiences and high-value items like TVs. Cyber Monday appeals to online shoppers seeking discounts on tech, gadgets, and home essentials.

Major retailers extend deals to cover both days and beyond. Amazon, for example, offers up to 50% off JBL headphones and Eufy cameras during Cyber Monday. Target features discounts like Apple AirPods Pro 2 for $189.99 and Apple Watch SE for $199.99.

Maximizing Savings

Shopping earlier helps secure top items before they sell out. Black Friday deals often roll into Cyber Monday, but unique offers still exist. Monitor dates for must-have items to avoid missing exclusive discounts. Whether shopping in stores or online, this shopping weekend promises savings you won’t want to miss.
