Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is reportedly considering Mehek Cooke, a Republican attorney and prominent Trump surrogate, to fill Vice President-elect JD Vance’s Senate seat. Vance, elected as Donald Trump’s running mate in 2024, will vacate his Senate position when he officially assumes the vice presidency in January 2025.
Cooke, a skilled fundraiser and outspoken Trump supporter during the 2024 campaign, has a legal background that includes serving in the Ohio Governor’s Office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and founding the consulting firm American Frontier Strategies. She has also been a visible political commentator and advocate for Trump’s policies.
Governor DeWine is required by state law to appoint a Republican to serve in the Senate until a special election in November 2026 determines who will complete the remainder of Vance’s term. Sources indicate that DeWine is inclined to elevate women in political leadership, with Cooke seen as a strong contender due to her ties to the Trump base and her reputation for honesty and independence.
Other potential candidates include former Ohio Republican Party Chair Jane Timken, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, and Lt. Governor Jon Husted. However, some contenders, such as Attorney General Dave Yost and Husted, are reportedly focused on future gubernatorial ambitions.
The appointment represents a balancing act for DeWine, as he seeks a candidate who appeals to both Trump-aligned Republicans and moderates within the party. The decision is not expected until Vance officially vacates the seat, with DeWine emphasizing the need for a “workhorse” who can earn the trust of Ohio voters.
Cooke has declined to comment on her potential candidacy, and DeWine’s office has provided no timeline for the decision.
